What are national flow of funds accounts?

National flow of funds accounts are sets of statistics that show the financial holdings and liabilities of major sectors of the financial market.
The tables show changes in holdings and liabilities by sector. The data is also arranged by type of financial instrument. In the United States, the flow of funds accounts are compiled and maintained by the Federal Reserve Bank and published quarterly (Release Z.1).
The methods for presenting the flow of funds accounts were developed by Morris Copeland, an economist with the Federal Reserve Bank, in the 1940s and 1950s.
The U.S. flow of funds accounts were first published in 1952 on an annual basis. By 1965, these statistics were issued quarterly, merged with data from the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA).
The U.S. flow of funds accounts are unique in that Morris Copeland based his initial concept on accounting principles, showing combined balance sheets for sectors classified by types of assets and liabilities.
The U.S. flow of funds accounts provide an overview of financial institutions (commercial banks, savings banks, broker-dealers, mutual funds, closed-end funds, insurance companies, etc.) as well as ownership of different classes of securities (treasuries, municipal bonds, corporate bonds, mutual funds, equities, mortgages, etc.)
